INTERLUDE VIII - CHAD

Chad tended to the sacred flame and went through his morning prayers with rote disinterest. They needed to be performed, and he dutifully did that, but he did not enjoy nor appreciate the process.

Yazad had made good on his word. Wilson had fallen into line with unexpected zeal, and that could only have happened if she’d gone to their “god” and been told in no uncertain terms that Chad was in charge.

He had the biggest part of his dreams fulfilled. He was the undisputed master of the Agency and was developing the power of shaping, which might even grant him immortality one day. It had certainly kept Yazad alive for millennia, at least if Chad’s researchers had done their job well.

They’d been given the name with no context to learn all they could and had come back saying it was one of the names of the god from Zoroastrianism. That put the name at over three millennia old, and he sincerely believed the man he spoke to was that old.

Someday Chad would be too, which was why he kept at the prayers even when his heart wasn’t in it.

Surprise flitted through him when Yazad’s face appeared in the flames, and for just a moment guilt and fear surged through him. Had Yazad sensed his lack of faith? If so, was he to be punished in some way? The old religions did not treat such things lightly, and the various gods had all committed absolute atrocities against their followers when they deviated from the righteous path.

“My devoted servant,” Yazad whispered through the flames, the ironic statement making Chad more certain that this man could read his heart and mind, “I have located your quarry. The man you seek, Mitch Dinkle, is in the town of Atar in the country of Mauritania on his way to the Richat Structure. He will arrive there in two days’ time. Use all the resources I have provided you to ensure you find him before he does so. He must not be allowed to enter the ruins there.”

“Of course, my lord.” Chad kept his hands outstretched and his posture perfect and did his best to push down his pride and force servitude. He might not like such a position but couldn’t deny that his new master had provided everything he’d said he would. “I can have my team through the portal in an hour. We’ll arrive at the Agency facility in country, which is in the city of Noukachott. We have a helipad and listening post, and I will requisition the helicopter to catch up. We might even be able to catch our quarry before they leave Atar.”

“Excellent.” The eyes flared in the flames, and a smile creased the bearded man’s face. “I will continue to observe our prey. Find him, Blackstone. Find him and kill him, and do it quickly. Failure will not be tolerated.”

Chad bristled at the threat, but kept his tongue. He was so close to everything he desired. He could afford to be submissive, for now at least.
